Muscle Mass

Table of contents

Your smart scale's muscle mass reading estimates how much of your body weight is made up of skeletal muscle, the contractile tissue that moves you and burns energy around the clock. It is one of the more useful numbers a body-composition device reports, because muscle underpins strength, metabolism, and how well you hold up as you age. Treat the daily figure as an estimate and watch where it heads over weeks and months.

Group

General skeletal muscle share of body weight

Men

Roughly 33–39%

Women

Roughly 28–33%

These are broad references that vary with age and build. Smart-scale muscle estimates are approximate; your own trend over time is the useful signal.

What the muscle mass metric measures

A smart scale does not weigh your muscle directly. It sends a tiny, unnoticeable electrical current through your body and measures how easily it passes, a method called bioimpedance. Muscle holds a lot of water and conducts well, while fat resists the current. The device combines that reading with your weight, height, age, and sex to estimate skeletal muscle mass. Because the estimate leans heavily on body water, your hydration, recent meals, and workouts can nudge the number up or down from one reading to the next.

Why muscle mass matters

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so carrying more of it raises the energy your body uses at rest and helps with blood sugar control. Its bigger role shows up over the long run. From roughly your thirties onward, muscle is lost gradually unless you work to keep it, a process called sarcopenia. That slow decline chips away at strength, balance, and the ability to recover from illness or a fall. Preserving muscle protects independence, mobility, and resilience as you age, which is why a steady or rising trend on your scale is worth paying attention to well before older age arrives.

How to build and preserve muscle

Resistance training is the main driver. Challenge your major muscle groups two or more times a week with weights, bands, or bodyweight moves, and gradually add load or reps as they get easier. Pair that stimulus with enough protein spread across your meals, and give yourself sleep and rest days so tissue can rebuild. Staying generally active helps too. This is general guidance for healthy adults, not medical advice; if muscle is dropping without explanation, raise it with a clinician.

Muscle mass FAQ

Why does my muscle mass change day to day?

Mostly hydration. Bioimpedance reads body water, so meals, workouts, and fluids shift the estimate. Weigh under similar conditions and follow the trend.

Can I gain muscle and lose fat at the same time?

Yes, especially when newer to training or returning after a break. A stable weight with rising muscle and falling fat is a strong sign.

Is a higher muscle reading always better?

Not necessarily. Aim for a healthy, steady level that supports your strength and daily function rather than chasing a maximum number.
